Preserving Vision for a Lifetime

Dear Friends:    Recently, I saw a patient who had good vision all her life and no family history of macular degeneration.  However, my Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan showed drusen in the retina, which is an early sign of this eye condition. This type of drusen was not obvious in the standard eye examination and with OCT, we can more accurately monitor for changes. OCT is a noninvasive imaging technology used to obtain high resolution cross-sectional images of the back of the eye.  There is an additional fee of $39, which is well worth early detection and treatment of disease.   Dietary and lifetstyle changes, as well as nutritional supplementation, can make a big difference in preserving vision for a lifetime.   We can also measure your macular pigment with our

MPOD (Macular Pigment Optical Density) instrument for a fee of $10.

1. Low macular pigment is a key risk factor for macular degeneration, the leading cause of significant vision loss over age 55.

2. Macular pigment absorbs harmful blue light, protecting the photo-receptors from damage.

3. Macular pigment improves visual performance, including:Visual acuity (ability to see fine details and read)
Contrast sensitivity (essential for driving at night!)
Glare recovery (recovery from temporary “blindness” caused by high intensity lighting, such as automobiles or stadium lights).  At your next visit, please talk to us about OCT and MPOD testing to determine your risk for macular degeneration.

Last week, I saw a precious young, special needs child for an eye examination.  Her parents reported that the pediatric ophthalmologist was unable to determine her prescription for glasses.  With extra time, care, and attention, I was able to give her an accurate presciption, which will greatly improve her vision and development.  After the exam, she made my day with a big hug!  It definitely renewed my enthusiasm for what we do and the care we provide.

We are hiring!   We are in need of part time and full time employees, who are professional, dependable, have excellent customer service skills and attention to detail.  A team player would be expected to learn all aspects of the practice, including eye exams, insurance, electronic medical records, eyeglasses, and contact lenses. Competitive pay with benefits based on past work experience.  Please submit resume to our office at 800 Trinity Dr. Ste B.

We are no longer providers for Eyemed, Vision Blue, Spectera, NM Medicaid/Centennial Care, and Humana.

Sincerely, Lisa Shin, O.D.
